Azerbaijani Flag Raised in Downtown Chicago to Celebrate the Day of Restoration of Independence
Chicago, October 18, 2024 – The Azerbaijani community in Chicago came together at the Richard J. Daley Center to celebrate the Day of Restoration of Independence with a memorable flag-raising ceremony. Organized by the Azerbaijan Center of Midwest America (ACMA), the event commemorated Azerbaijan’s regaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, marking its 33rd anniversary.
The ceremony began with the Azerbaijani tricolor flag being hoisted high against the iconic Chicago skyline. The playing of the Azerbaijani National Anthem set the tone for the day, as attendees reflected on the resilience and progress of Azerbaijan.
Mr. Farid Mammadov, head of ACMA, addressed the crowd with a heartfelt message. “This flag-raising is a tribute to the enduring spirit of Azerbaijan. It’s a day to remember our history, celebrate our cultural richness, and share it with the world,” he said.
The program featured traditional Azerbaijani music, mesmerizing dance performances, and a showcase of cultural artifacts, offering attendees a glimpse into Azerbaijan’s heritage. The event attracted a diverse audience, symbolizing unity and mutual respect among nations.
History of Independence Restoration Day
October 18, 1991, marked Azerbaijan’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union, a historic step in reclaiming sovereignty after decades of Soviet rule. Known as “Müstəqilliyin Bərpası Günü,” this day celebrates Azerbaijan’s reaffirmation of the values and aspirations first established during the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) in 1918.
The ADR was the first secular parliamentary democracy in the Muslim world, celebrated for its progressive reforms, including granting women the right to vote. Though the ADR existed for only 23 months, its legacy lived on and inspired the country’s independence movement in the late 20th century.
Today, Azerbaijan continues to honor the achievements and aspirations of its forebearers while building a modern, progressive nation that bridges East and West.
