🏛️ Recognized by UNESCO
Azerbaijani Mugham was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003 and inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List in 2008.
🎼 A living tradition
Mugham combines a learned musical tradition with improvisation. Each performance brings a personal interpretation, allowing familiar melodies to reveal new expressions.
🎤 Voice and instruments
A singer, known as a khanande, may perform alongside the tar, kamancha and frame drum. Listen for the way the musicians respond to one another as the music moves from delicate phrases to powerful moments.
🤝 From master to student
Through close study with experienced performers, the skills and expressive richness of Mugham pass to new generations. It has a place in celebrations, intimate gatherings and concert halls, connecting music with community life.
🇦🇿🤝🇺🇸 Sharing our heritage
At the Azerbaijan Center of Midwest America, we share Azerbaijani culture with our neighbors and help younger generations connect with their heritage.
