After declaring the independence of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 28th May 1918, one of the most important tasks became the creating of national armed forces. Already in 26th June of the same year Council of Ministers was organized first regular military unit.

According to the decree, which was signed by the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev 70 years later in 22th May, the 26th June became the Armed Forces Day of Azerbaijan Republic. Already 18 years, 26th June celebrates in Azerbaijan as a national holiday.
