In 1960, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) was already a major hub for air travel in the United States. It had four runways, and a fifth one was under construction at that time. The airport was operated by the City of Chicago Department of Aviation and served as a major hub for United Airlines and American Airlines.
In that year, the airport handled over 10 million passengers and was ranked as the busiest airport in the world in terms of aircraft movements. It was also the first airport to have a control tower equipped with radar, which allowed for more efficient air traffic control.
During the 1960s, O’Hare continued to expand with the construction of additional terminals and runways. The airport became a major economic engine for the city of Chicago and a key transportation hub for the entire country. Today, O’Hare remains one of the busiest airports in the world, handling millions of passengers and serving as a critical gateway for air travel in the United States.
